My walking life

My walking life

I’m told I took my first steps at ten months old; I was obviously keen to get going. It’s just over fifty years since I started walking. More than half a century later, I think it’s about time I stopped to look back.

After a wildly itinerant life, I finally settled in Fleetwood, a small town at the southern edge of Morecambe Bay in northwest England. It’s a magical place where the fast-moving tide ebbs and flows and the landscape changes hour by hour. It’s also home to the best sunsets in the world, which I love sharing with my partner, Karl.

My worldview is shaped by druidry, an ancient, nature-centred spiritual practice. Druidry is rooted in collaboration with the more-than-human world, and inspired by the ancestral wisdom and rich heritage of the Celtic peoples of the Atlantic Northwest. So for me, living where sea, land, and sky converge is no accident. Being a druid of the wild edge helps me embrace my intuition as I tread the path across life’s shifting sands.

I’m also proudly neurodivergent. I have multi-sensory aphantasia, which means I can’t consciously access any of the senses in my inner world. And my severely deficient autobiographical memory (SDAM) prevents me from mentally time travelling to re-experience past events or envisage the future. There are real challenges caused by these conditions, but I’ve come to consider them as strengths, too. Aphantasia turns my attention outward to notice and capture the detail of the world around me, transforming inner exploration into real-world experience, while SDAM roots me firmly in the present moment. Journalling, photography, ritual and storytelling are essential tools that help me navigate life’s journey, and I’ve learned to approach myself and others with curiosity and kindness.

If you want to connect with me on Bluesky, I’d love to get to know you.

Work with me

Aside from writing, I work as an organisational consultant and social impact entrepreneur. I help people do good things together, and support business to understand their values, shape their culture and have a bigger positive impact in the world.

Working with individuals, I’ve trained as a coach and facilitator in the fields of nature connection, mindfulness and labyrinths. The courses, workshops and programmes I developed have helped thousands of people through difficult transitions in life. I spent nearly a decade supporting people who wanted to drink mindfully and live well, and I’m the author of How to Be a Mindful Drinker (published by Dorling Kindersley in 2019).
