I just went through this process as I mulled what's in store for me this year. I came up with a word and then several words, that feel more like a companion and outlook than things I must do. We'll see how it goes, and maybe I'll review on 2/2 and 3/3, good idea. My words: Strong back, soft front, wild heart, and eyes on the sky. I wrote about it here if you want to read more. https://riversandroadspdx.com/2025/01/05/eyes-on-the-sky/
100% get the dog! I agree entirely with your wonderful words. My approach to walking, adventure and life is exploration… I’m writing that Substack in my head… Exploration feels like an ambition not a resolution but it gives me enough focus to begin. Thank you for prompting this thought.
I love the idea of exploration as an attitude and a practice. If you already know what you're looking for, what's the point in looking at all? There's something so compelling about open-ended and generative goals which keep evolving as you discover more.

Your words sound like wonderful compass bearings for the year ahead. Travel well with them!
This line: I know now that I travel furthest when I let kindness guide my footsteps.
That's beautiful Dru.
Thanks, Sarah.
Yes, multidimensional walking is something that chimes with me - thanks fo rthat insight. The step counters are tyrants!
I agree. Counting steps is like writing with only a word count in mind. Quality over quantity every time!
