Daisies follow the sun. At dawn, their white petals unfurl and turn to the east to greet the sun. Warming themselves to attract bees, the flowers follow the light across the sky, bending towards the sunset before they close again in darkness.
Of all the unwanted visitors in manicured lawns, I think daisies are the most enchanting. On long summer days, there's a quiet joy in lying in the grass, picking the longest daisies and carefully splitting the stem with your thumbnail to begin a daisy chain.
If you have daisies in your garden, leave your mower in the shed. And the next time you pass a patch of inviting, white-flecked grass, take a moment to sit. Lie down if you can. Look a daisy in the eye, and be enchanted.
I have only a small portion of my property dedicated to lawn, and it’s steadily becoming a mixture of grass, clover and other groundcover. I’m mowing around the daisies creating growing islands of them!
