At this time of year, birdsong fills the air. In still mornings and on warm evenings, the blackbirds’ melody echoes across gardens. Song thrushes and larks showcase their virtuosity.
There is such beauty in the harmonious calling of birds, but so many living beings long for their voices to be heard. Croaking toads, barking dogs, crying gulls. So often, these sounds are not made for our ears, but neither is the song of birds that we treasure. We are simply an accidental audience overhearing the polyphonic music of life.
Soundscape ecologist call this biophony. This week, find a spot where you can sit still, close your eyes, and listen. Let your ears be drawn to the voices of the more-than-human world. Like you, they sing because they are alive.
