Over the past few months, I've been at a crossroads over the direction of my work. Not just stuck in indecision, but sunk so deeply into the thick mud of uncertainty that I couldn't work out how to move forward.
“Imagine yourself ten years from now” is an invitation that fills me with dread, and I've realised that few of the visualisation-based coaching questions meet my neurodivergent needs. As someone who lives with aphantasia and SDAM (severely deficient autobiographical memory), I find it hard to remember the past and imagine the future. Having a quiet mind that's rooted in the present moment is a state that many people strive hard to attain through mindfulness and meditation. But it's my default mental mode, and I often struggle to get beyond it.
Present-centredness is incredibly freeing until it becomes a prison. Learning from experience to create a better tomorrow is something I have to work hard at, as I find new ways to collaborate with my brain's limitations. Getting unstuck requires some creativity, and I want to share some of the tools and practices I've found helpful.
